Development of a Registered Nurse Competency Framework, Emergency Department, Buddhachinaraj Phitsanulok Hospital

Abstract

The competency of registered nurses is important for human resource management and service quality development in regards to patient safety. The purpose of this development study was to develop a competency framework of registered nurses in the emergency department of Buddhachinaraj Phitsanulok Hospital by applying the model for developing competency framework of Marrelli, Tondora, and Hoge (2005). The population of this study consisted of ten specialist nurses who are working in the emergency department at Buddhachinaraj Phitsanulok hospital, and a panel of five experts. The instrument used for this study was an interview guideline validated by a panel of three experts. The data collection process included reviewing the relevant literature, and interviewing ten specialist nurses. Content analysis and item content validity index calculation of behavioral indicators of each competency were used for data analysis.
The results of this study revealed that a competency framework for registered nurses in the emergency department at Buddhachinaraj Phitsanulok hospital consisted of four categories and twenty eight behavioral indicators which were 1) competency of skill in assessment and triage consisted of seven behavioral indicators, 2) competency of nursing practice in critical and emergency condition consisting of eight behavioral indicators, 3) competency of assist at crime scene consisted of eight behavioral indicators, 4) competency of management in emergency situation and disaster consisted of five behavioral indicators.
Nurse administrators can apply this competency framework to create a performance evaluation measurement and to improve the knowledge and ability of registered nurses in the emergency department at Buddhachinaraj Phitsanulok Hospital.
