The Effect of a Health Literacy Development Program Through Line Application on Hemoglobin A1C in New Type 2 Diabetes

Health literacy refers to the ability to access and use health information to promote and maintain one’s health. Newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients with health literacy will be able to effectively manage their health using the information they have. The objectives of this study were: 1) to compare HbA1c of newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients before and after participating in a health literacy development program delivered via Line application, and 2) to compare HbA1c levels between the group receiving the program and a group receiving standard nursing care. The participants consisted of 44 newly diagnosed (no longer than one year) type 2 diabetes patients. They were divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 22 individuals in each group. Research instruments included the health literacy development program delivered via an application, a personal information questionnaire, and a health literacy assessment tool with a content validity index of 0.98 and reliability coefficient of 0.87. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests.
The study found that the mean HbA1c levels of the experimental group significantly decreased from 7.773 (SD = 0.4569) to 7.005 (SD = 0.5094) (t = 2.897, p < .05). When comparing between groups, the experimental group (M = 7.005, SD = 0.5094) differed significantly from the control group (M = 7.491, SD = 0.6509) (t = -2.760, p < .05).
The findings demonstrate that the health literacy development program delivered via Line application effectively reduced HbA1c levels in the experimental group.
