Effect of a Psychosocial Support Program on Child Care Self-Efficacy and Postpartum Depression in First-Time Mothers

The postpartum period is considered a high-risk time for postpartum depression, which affects the health of the mother and child, as well as the relationships among the mother, child, husband, and family. A lack of motherhood experience can affect child care self-efficacy, leading to anxiety and an increased risk of postpartum depression. This study aimed to examine the effects of a psychosocial support program on child care self-efficacy and postpartum depresssion in first-time mothers. The participants were 46 first-time postpartum mothers admitted in the postpartum ward at a tertiary hospital in Bangkok. The experimental group (n = 23) received the psychosocial support program in addition to standard nursing care while the control group (n = 23) received only standard nursing care. Data were collected using a personal questionnaire, the Thai version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and a measure of perceived child care self-efficacy. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U test.
The study revealed that the mean score of perceived child care self-efficacy in the experimental group was statistically significantly higher than that of the control group (z = -4.06, p < .001). Additionally, the mean score for postpartum depression in the experimental group was statistically significantly lower than that of the control group (z = -5.03, p < .001).
The findings of this study show that the psychosocial support program can promote self-efficacy in childcare and reduce the risk of postpartum depression.
