This research aimed to determine the nursing students’ opinions on the use of 4A’s method (Ask, Advise, Assess, and Assist), and the results of 4A’s method towards smoking cessation among the clients. The study sample comprised 95 second year nursing students of Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Chon Buri province enrolling in the practicum course on “Principles and Techniques of Nursing” and 95 smokers participating in the smoking cessation program. The research instruments were composed of three measurements, two of which were developed by the researchers, and the other was the clients’ history records using the form designated by Smoking Cessation Campaign Foundation of Thailand. One of the first two measurements was a teaching plan for smoking cessation clients employing the 4 A’s Method. The other was a questionnaire assessing the nursing students’ opinions towards the use of the 4A’s Method. All the measurements were tested for content validity and reliability. The reliability of the questionnaire was 0.81 using Cronbach Alpha. The data were then processed and analyzed using percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The results were as follows:
1. Students’ opinions after using the 4-A methods
1.1 The students reported a moderate level of knowledge sufficiency to help the clients quit smoking with the mean at 2.46, and SD. at 0.29.
1.2 The students expressed a high level of confidence to give advice to the clients with the mean at 3.83 and SD. at 0.39.
1.3 The students reported a high level of performance to promote clients to quit smoking with the mean at 4.12 and SD. at 0.45.
2. After the implementation of the 4A’s method, 65.3 percent of the clients reported that they are going to quit smoking later on but have not yet specified exactly when.
The results of the study showed that the students had a good attitude towards using the 4A methods to help smokers to quit the habit, and intended to use the techniques in their jobs later on in their future careers. It is strongly recommended that the 4A method should be incorporated into the nursing curriculum.
