Factors Associated with Physical Activity Among Buddhist Monks in Mueang Ratchaburi District, Ratchaburi Province

Abstract

Introduction: Monks are a distinct population with unique lifestyles and increased risks of non-communicable diseases. Identifying factors associated with physical activity in Mueang Ratchaburi District will inform context-appropriate interventions to promote a better quality of life among monks. Materials and Method: This study employed a cross-sectional descriptive design among 180 monks from 18 temples in Mueang Ratchaburi District, Ratchaburi Province, using stratified random sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire covering individual, psychological, social, environmental, and physical activity factors. Data were analyzed using statistical software. Variables were described using percentages, means, and standard deviations, while associations between variables were analyzed using logistic regression. Results: Most participants reported high levels of intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and self-efficacy (82.2%, 82.2%, and 80.6%, respectively). High levels of support from the monastic community and laypeople were reported by 66.1% and 43.3%, respectively. Additionally, 67.8% and 81.7% perceived the temple and external environments as highly supportive of physical activity. Nearly all participants (97.8%) achieved sufficient physical activity (≥600 MET-minutes/week), with 79.4% classified at a high level. Multivariable analysis indicated that duration of ordination (AOR = 2.53; 95% CI = 1.19– 5.38; P = .016) and self-efficacy (AOR = 3.10; 95% CI = 1.34–7.14; P = .008) were significantly associated with physical activity levels. Conclusion: Nearly all monks achieved sufficient physical activity, with most performing at a high level. Duration of ordination and self-efficacy were significantly associated with physical activity levels. Therefore, promotion efforts should focus on enhancing self-efficacy and developing programs tailored to the duration of ordination, in alignment with monastic life and the Vinaya.
