Effectiveness of Vegetable and Fruit Consumption Program to Promote Healthy Eating among Elementary Students of Warinchamrap District, Ubon Ratchathani Province

Abstract

            This quasi- experimental study aimed to investigate the effect of promoting vegetable and fruit consumption education program among grade 4-6th at two elementary students in Warinchamrap District, Ubon Ratchathani Province in which having school lunch program and at least one physical education instructor. Participants were randomly divided into 2 groups: a study group of 63 students and the comparison group of 111 students. The intervention group received a four-week vegetable and fruits consumption program based on the application of Health Belief Model and Social Cognitive Model. The intervention program included teaching skills for 5-color fruits and vegetables selection, teaching fruits and vegetables knowledge and benefits, rewarding and modeling for increasing fruits and vegetables consumption. The data were collected before and after intervention using questionnaires and tests.  Descriptive statistics were determined, including frequencies, mean, standard deviation and percentages. Independent t- test, paired t-test and Pearson’s chi-squares were also computed. 

            The results indicated that the intervention group significantly increased in knowledge and vegetable and fruit consumption compared with the comparison group (p <0.001). However, perception and attitude were not significantly different. Results suggested that the intervention program should be enhanced into other schools with cooperation with family members and schools. In addition, the intervention should be expanded for at least 6-8 weeks.
