Physical and Mental Health and Needs of Caregivers for Bed Ridden Patients in Sub-district Wiang , Chiang Khong District , Chiang Rai Province

Abstract

This descriptive study aimed to assess physical and mental health and needs of caregivers in Tumbon Wiang , Chiang Khong District , Chiang Rai Province. The participants consisted of 10 caregivers of bed-ridden patients with Barthel ADL Index 0-4/20 scores. Data were conducted using questionnaire interviews 1) data of caregiver 10 questions and data of bed-ridden patients 4 sections 2) open- ended questions for physical health of patients and caregivers 3) caregiver’s strain Index (CSI) and 4) need assessment for caregivers of bed-ridden patients. The results showed 70% of caregivers have underlying diseases and symptoms are stable, 60% of caregivers had stress during care-bed-ridden patients, and the causes of caregiver’s stress were a free time limiting or cannot visit. The high score for needs of caregivers were including 1) the information about skin caring of bed-ridden patients 2) the listening to the needs and understand from family members 3) caregivers needed take care when they were sick 4) a forgiving from bed-ridden patient 5) the family members took care of bed-ridden patient instead of caregivers 6) financial supports for caregivers and 7) having an enough rest.
