Abstract

A cross-sectional study aimed to enumerate the prevalence of alcohol consumption and  associated factors among high school students in one high school in Chaiyaphum Province (n=1,119). The 349 study subjects were recruited by systematic random sampling during June and July 2018. The data were analyzed by statistical program for percentage, mean, standard deviation, and multiple logistic regression (with 95% CI) were administered to determine the associated factors to alcohol consumption.

The findings showed that more than half of the participants were female (65.90%) and 16.48 years old on average, and living with parents (78.51%). The average family income was 22,457.02 Baht (SD= 19,852.72), average students’ allowance and money payment was 2,585 Baht (S.D. = 1,446.80) per month. The prevalence of alcohol consumption was 58.45%.  Factors that were associated with alcohol consumption were students who study in Grade 12th (OR Adjusted =2.89; 95 % CI: 1.68 to 4.98; p-value <0.001), family income median income ≥ 10,000 Baht (OR Adjusted =1.99; 95 % CI: 1.15 to 3.48; p-value <0.001). This study suggests that the campaign to reduce alcohol consumption should be employed continuously and providing essential knowledge to students who get the wrong message about alcohol consumption.
