Abstract

This quasi-experimental research study aimed to: 1) determine knowledge regarding unplanned pregnancy prevention among second-year nursing students, 2) compare knowledge regarding unplanned pregnancy prevention before and after pregnancy prevention education 3) compare knowledge regarding unplanned pregnancy prevention immediately after, 2 weeks, 6 months, one year, and 1.5 years after pregnancy prevention education program was completed. Participants included 99 second-year nursing students enrolled in the 2018 academic year. Data were collected at 1 week before participation in the education program, as well as immediately after, 2 weeks, 6 months, one year, and 1.5 years after program completion. We collected data on the students’ knowledge using a pregnancy prevention questionnaire, which had a reliability value of 0.79. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (percentage, frequency, mean, standard deviation), paired t-test, and one-way, repeated measures ANOVA. Results were found as follows:

  1. Overall, mean score of knowledge regarding pregnancy prevention regarding contraceptive pill and condom use was at an excellent level. Knowledge regarding use of emergency contraceptive pills was at a good level.
  2. Mean score of knowledge regarding pregnancy prevention after education program at different time points was significantly higher than that of before the education program (immediately after: p=0.01, 6 months after: t=16.166, p<0.001; 1 year after, t=17.895, p<0.001; 1.5 years after: t=12.929, p<0.001).
  3. Mean score of knowledge regarding pregnancy prevention immediately after pregnancy prevention education program was significantly different from that of 2 weeks after the program (p=0.05). Mean score of knowledge regarding pregnancy prevention immediately after and 2 weeks after the program was significantly different from that of other time periods (p=0.01). Mean score of knowledge regarding pregnancy prevention at 6 months, one year, and 1.5 years after pregnancy prevention education was not different.
