Self - Care Behaviors of Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Namom Hospital Songkhla Province

This descriptive research aimed to study self-care behaviors of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Study subjects were 128 patients diagnosed with COPD and provided treatment in COPD clinic at Namom hospital, Songkhla province. The sample size was determined using G* power program with sampling without replacement method. Data collection were demographic recording form and self-care behavior questionnaires that were validated by three experts with IOC .67- 1.00 and tested for reliability by Alpha Cronbach’s Coefficient with value of .89. Data were analyzed using frequency, percent, mean, standard deviation and t-test.
The results showed that 1) Overall, self-care behaviors of patients with COPD were at a high level ( =3.32, S.D. = 0.25). The mean score of medication Inhaler use was the highest ( =3.73, S.D. =0.35), whereas that of pursed lip breathing was the lowest ( =2.70, S.D. =0.53)
2) Patients with COPD and the duration of the disease with different self-care behaviors were significantly different (p<0.05) whereas complications or co-morbidities were not statistically different.
