Quality of Work Life and Happiness among Waiters in Mueang District, Phuket Province, Thailand

The objectives of this mixed methods research study were: 1) to study the quality of work life and the happiness among waiters in Mueang District, Phuket Province, Thailand quantitatively, and 2) to gather in-depth, qualitative data about these topics. The participants in the questionnaire included 316 waiters. 10 participants were selected by criterion sampling to participate in the qualitative study. Quantitative data were collected via questionnaire. These data were analyzed by descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, median, quartile range). Qualitative data were collected via interview form and observation form, and analyzed by the content analysis method.
We found that the overall quality of work life of the participants was at a moderate level ( = 3.41±0.44). Considering individual aspects of the quality of work life, participants gave the highest scores for safe and healthy working conditions ( = 3.59±0.65). Overall, the happiness of participants was at a “Happy” level ( = 63.37±9.21). When individual aspects were examined, participants reported the highest scores for having a happy family ( = 72.91±18.25). The participants’ opinions regarding their quality of work life was quite good; they reported only a few problems with work. With regards to happiness, the respondents generally expressed having a happy life, but complained about problems with expenses.
Our research findings have included information on the overall quality and individual aspects of work life and happiness, as well as in-depth information on these topics. This information could be utilized for enhancing the quality of work life and happiness of waiters. These efforts can increase their motivation by promoting a better quality of work life and happy living.
In conclusion, the findings of this research indicated that information on the quality of work life and happiness for both overall and individual aspects as well as in-depth information of restaurant could be applied as useful information for enhancing the quality of work life and happiness of waiters, increasing their motivation under better quality of work life and happy living.
