Effects of Safety Promotional Program Intervention via Smartphone Communication Technology in Para Wood Sawmill workers

Abstract

We conducted a quasi-experimental research study aimed to determine the effect of a program to promote safety activities with communication technology via smartphones. The sample group used in this study consisted of workers employed at 2 rubberwood processing factories. Workers were randomly assigned to either an experimental group of 80 workers or a control group of 80 workers. The educational tools included a video clip-based safety promotion program. We also conducted questionnaire interviews to gather personal information and attitudes about safety, hazard perceptions, and behaviors.  We calculated descriptive statistics, including percentage, mean, and standard deviation. We tested hypotheses using an independent t-test and multiple regression analysis.

The results of the four pre- and post-analyses showed that the experimental group had an increase in score level for attitude, perception, and behaviors after implementation of the program of promoting safety via smartphones. There was a statistically significant difference at the 0.05 level (p-value < 0.01) comparing scores before and after the intervention. There was also statistically significant difference comparing scores between the experimental and control groups at the 0.05 level (p-value < 0.01). Our analysis of factors affecting defensive behavior found that the attitude towards safety and perceived hazards were able to predict 44.2% of the variance in defensive behaviors and that attitude was a statistically significant predictor at the 0.05 level.
