Nutrition for the Older Persons During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Keywords:
Nutrition, Older persons, COVID-19Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic spread throughout the world. Simultaneously, older persons are at the higher risk of morbidity and mortality than younger persons due to low immunity and chronic disease. Human immunity is supported by nutritional status. Older persons are at increased nutritional risk because they are affected by physical and socioeconomic factors due to aging process and the COVID-19 pandemic. Older persons infected by COVID-19 have high risk of developing malnutrition, sarcopenia and cachexia. Thus, it is important to promote good nutrition among older persons to prevent COVID-19 infection. Screening and nutritional assessment in the older persons is also absolutely necessary. Early intervention can enable older persons to get quick access to care prior to having malnutrition or progressive malnutrition. As a result, essential care for the older persons includes a balanced diet to promote immunity. Nutritional care needs to be a focus during the COVID-19 pandemic.
