Prevention and Control of Dengue Fever for Dengue Surveillance in the Community of Ton Pao Municipality, San Kamphaeng District, Chiang Mai Province

Abstract

This qualitative study aimed to study the community's perspectives on disease prevention, control and dengue fever surveillance system for developing of innovative applications used in surveillance. A warning for prevention and control of dengue fever in the area of ​​Ton Pao Municipality, San Kamphaeng District, Chiang Mai Province by in-depth interviews and focus groups. A purposive sample was selected by selecting 5 officials from relevant agencies for in-depth interviews, including staffs at the Subdistrict Health Promoting Hospital and officials of local government organizations working related to public health and the environment and conducted group discussions with 2 groups: 6 village health volunteers and 6 people in the Ton Pao Municipality of San Kamphaeng District Chiang Mai Province.

The data were collected between 1 - 30 January 2023. The data were analyzed using content analysis.  The results showed that community perspectives on prevention and control of dengue fever and found the causes of 5 important problems in prevention and control of dengue fever including 1) environmental aspects in the community that facilitate the outbreak of the disease, 2) lacking of knowledge and awareness of the people, 3) lacking of participation from the community in preventing and controlling dengue fever, 4) cooperation of involved  sectors and agencies, and 5) the management policy was not as comprehensive as it should be. The area's surveillance system still lacks of the participation of involved networks, causing delays in reporting and rarely employ of the surveillance system. Therefore, the new solutions should be designed to create a new innovative dimension of the surveillance system. A warning system should strengthen participations with all sectors for citizens to be part of the surveillance system for prevention and control of dengue fever in Ton Pao Municipality community, San Kamphaeng District, Chiang Mai Province.
