Abstract

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of frailty among elderly with type-2 diabetes patients for health promotion, prevention, and long-term care. Study design: Descriptive, cross-sectional study. Materials and Methods: Baseline characteristics were collected using a questionnaire, and the diagnosis of frailty was based on FRAIL scale in elderly with diabetic mellitus patients. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze baseline data. Factors associated with frailty were analyzed using univariate and multivariate regression analysis.

Results: The prevalence rate of frailty is 21.95%. Factors associated with frailty according to multivariate analyses were age > 70 years old (AOR 2.6, p 2.068), living alone (AOR 4.9 p 0.001), smoking (AOR 12.2, p <0.001), comorbid chronic kidney disease (AOR 2.7 p 0.049), comorbid cardiovascular disease (AOR 6.8 p 0.013), total/partial dependent (AOR 7.6 p < 0.001). Conclusions: Frailty affected 21.9% of elderly with diabetic mellitus patients. Age>70 years old, living alone, smoking, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and total/partial dependence were associated with frailty. Early identification and intervention in at-risk patients will benefit in preventing or delaying the adverse outcomes of frailty.
