Abstract

This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to examine factors associated with growth status among malnourished early childhood children in Sateng Nok Subdistrict, Mueang District, Yala Province, Thailand. The sample consisted of 140 children aged 0–5 years with malnutrition, selected using the Krejcie and Morgan sampling table. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire with acceptable content validity (IOC = 0.67–1.00) and reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.70). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, including Pearson’s correlation, Spearman’s rank correlation, point-biserial correlation, and Chi-square test.

The results indicated that maternal age was weakly but significantly associated with weight-for-age (r = 0.173, p < 0.05) and height-for-age (r = 0.216, p < 0.01). In addition, antenatal care, milk feeding, and child development were significantly associated with weight-for-height (p < 0.05). However, maternal education, occupation, household income, and environmental factors were not significantly associated with child growth. In conclusion, maternal and child care factors play a significant role in the growth of malnourished children. Strengthening antenatal care, promoting appropriate feeding practices, and monitoring child development are essential strategies to improve growth outcomes among at-risk children.
