Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to: 1) professional quality of life among nurses and 2) explore guidelines to improve it among nurses at Nakornping Hospital, Chiang Mai Province. The sample included 279 professional nurses who completed questionnaires and 17 professional nurses who participated in focus group discussions. The research instruments consisted of three parts: 1) a personal data form, 2) the Professional Quality of Life Scale, back translated from Stamm’s (2010) Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL5), and 3) the focus group interview guidelines. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the three subscales of ProQOL5 including Compassion satisfaction, Burnout, and Secondary traumatic stress was 0.88, 0.80 and 0.82, and the guidelines were validated.Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and content analysis.

The results showed that Professional quality of life among nurses in Nakornping Hospital was at a moderate level in three domains: compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress (mean = 37.63, S.D. = 5.49; mean = 27.18, S.D. = 3.62; and mean = 25.22, S.D. = 6.00, respectively). The guidelines for improving the professional quality of life among nurses at Nakornping Hospital, Chiang Mai Province, are as follows Creating a positive work environment,Increasing nurses' competence, Promoting physical and mental health, Dealing with traumatic events through changing their thinking and behavior and Managing work stress. recommendation is that the hospital establishing clear strategies, creating a safe and standardized work environment, and promoting and supporting training, professional knowledge enhancement, and skills development in physical and mental health to improve the quality of life in the nursing profession for nurses at Nakornping Hospital, Chiang Mai Province.
