Abstract

Most students were unable to use English in everyday life, appropriately. To gain familiarity and understanding in listening, reading and grammar as well as helping self-learning skills, the program on English skills was developed for competency of listening, reading and grammar among students.

This quasi-experimental research in one group pretest-posttest design aimed to determine the effects of education program on English skills of listening, reading and grammar among students in Diploma of Public Health Program in Pharmacy Technique, Sirindhorn College of Public Health, Trang (SCPH Trang). Seventy-six Pharmacy Technique students consisted of forty-four of the first year and thirty-two of the second year in Academic Year 2017. Data were collected in five weeks. There are three parts as 1) education program of English skills of listening, reading and grammar, 2) knowledge test and 3) attitude and behavior questionnaires of listening, reading and grammar (Reliability: Cronbach's alpha = 0.86 and 0.94, respectively). Percentage, mean, standard deviation, and paired sample t-test were used for data analysis.

The results showed that most students were female (93.42%), aged 19.29 years with Buddhism (97.37%), studying in the first year (57.90%) with the grade point average (GPA) of English in the last academic year between 3.00-3.49 (53.95%) and had the average income per month lower than 5,000 Baht and between 5,001-7,500 Bath evenly (50.00%). The overall attitude and behavior were good (M=3.68, SD=0.28) and high (M=3.16, SD=0.51), respectively. Participants who participated in the program of English skills of listening, reading and grammar (M=28.96, SD=5.72) were statistically higher knowledge than before educating the program (M=15.07, SD=2.99) at 0.05 (p < 0.01).

The education program on English skills of listening, reading and grammar increased the Pharmacy Technique students’ cognition and experiences of those. They would be not only ready and confident on English examination every Academic Year but also passed the requirement. This education program could be the guideline to improve Pharmacy Technique students’ potential on English skills in the next Academic Year.
