Perceptions and Expectations of the Elderly towards Public Health Long-Term Care System in Ban Thamniap Subdistrict, Khiri Rat Nikhom District, Surat Thani Province

This study aimed to (1) explore perceptions and expectations, (2) identify factors related to perceptions and expectations, and (3) compare the perceptions and expectations, all of elderly people towards public health long-term care system. This study involved a sample of 286 elderly people aged 60 years and over who lived in Ban Thamniap subdistrict, Khiri Rat Nikhom district, Surat Thani province. Data were collected using a structured interview questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis.
The findings showed that: 1) most of elderly people were women aged under 70 years old, with underlying medical conditions and levels of perceptions and expectations towards the long-term care system in public health as a whole and in each aspect were at a high level, 2) The factors related to elderly people were being in the 70–79 years old (P = 0.036), being elderly club members with irregular group activity participation (P = 0.008) and being members with regular participation (P < 0.001). The factors related to elderly people expectations were the completion of secondary school or higher (P = 0.042) and a monthly income of 5,000–10,000 baht (P = 0.003), and 3) the elderly’s perceptions were at a high level (= 4.08), which was significantly lower than the overall expectations also at a high level (= 4.48) (P < 0.001).
