A survey of factors associated with schoolbag carrying and pain during schoolbag usage in high school students of Darawittayalai School, Chiang Mai
Main Article Content
Abstract
Carrying school bag or backpack is one cause of shoulder and back pain found in students, especially when carrying heavy backpack. However, there are other factors which are involved in schoolbag use that may cause pain in students. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the factors associated with schoolbag carrying and pain during schoolbag usage. Twelve hundred and eighty high school students of Darawittayalai School, Chiang Mai, were asked about their schoolbag usage and pain during carrying schoolbag using a self-administered questionnaire. Frequency and percentage were reported. The results of this study found that most high school students used backpack without chest and waist straps (88.3%). Forty-nine percent of the students carried backpack above their waist. Approximately one-half of students carried backpack for less than 2-hour period in a day (51.6%). Things students carry in the heaviest day were books (95.2%), school equipment (69.1%) and water bottle (20.2%). In addition, during carrying school bag
most students reported that they had pain within 2 hours (37.7%), with occasional pain (80.2%) in shoulder and scapular regions (78.2% for the left side and 80.1% for the right side). The results also found that the number of students who had pain during carrying backpack was statistically different by only bag type (p=0.02). Therefore, the results from this study may be a basic knowledge for further study in risk factors of pain associated with schoolbag usage.
