This research and development study was designed to develop a foot care model using bamboo materials for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). The study consisted of 4 phases including Phase 1: Situation ssessment; Phase 2: Searching and selecting local wisdom; Phase 3: implementing the developed model; and Phase 4: Evaluation.

The situational assessment was a study of the complications of DM by analyzing the patient’s history of illness at seven sub-district health promoting hospitals. The most three common complications were found including renal failure, diabetic neuropathies, and cataracts. A focus group 20 people involved with the care of the elderly with DM revealed that they wanted to identify the activities to prevent complications of foot reflexology using local wisdom as the risk of Peripheral Arterial Disease is more than 28%. The researcher introduced the use of bamboo materials for foot massage to develop a foot care program for diabetic patients validated by experts in medical science and Thai traditional medicine. The activity schedule and developed foot care skill were identified and implemented with health education. This study conceptual framework was based on self-efficacy theory. A purposive sampling method was used to select 50 people and equally divided them into an experimental and control groups. A set of questionnaires were administered at post-intervention after four weeks. It was found that the mean scores of the foot numbness and peripheral arterial strictness in the intervention group were significantly lower than those of the control group (p<.05). After twelve weeks it was determined that an overall satisfaction with the foot care program of the DM patients was at high level (=4.47, SD=.70).
