Abstract

This research is a descriptive correlational study aiming to 1) explore health literacy among adolescents 2) investigate the relationship between health literacy factors and smoking and alcohol consumption behaviors among adolescents. The sample group was 13-17 years old Thai adolescents who live in and are listed in the civil registration of Yang Noeng Sub-District, Saraphi District, Chiang Mai Province. Accidental sampling was used to recruit 195 samples. They were randomly selected using multi-stage sampling. The research instruments consisted of a Personal information questionnaire and Health literacy of the adolescent questionnaire, with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .78. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient.

The results of this study show that:

          1) Samples had high level of overall health literacy (M = 111.96, SD = 14.94). Specifically, acquaintance with media and information at high level was 90.44%, followed by self-management of health conditions at high level, which was 82.68%; knowledge and understanding of health at high level was 81.93%, health decision at high level is 81.42%, accessibility of information and healthcare services at high level was 77.12%, and health communication at moderate level was 77.08%.

         2) The accessibility of information and healthcare services about drug abuse risk behaviors was significantly negatively correlated at a low level with alcohol consumption behaviors (r = .197, p < 0.01); self-management of health conditions related to drug abuse risk behaviors was significantly negatively correlated at a low level with alcohol consumption behaviors (r = .161, p < .05), and health literacy factors related to drug abuse risk behaviors were not correlated with smoking consumption behaviors among adolescents.
