Abstract

            The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the experiences of using online learning and teaching in the Adult and Gerontological Nursing Practicum II subject during the COVID19 pandemic. Forty-seven informants consisting of 31 nursing students, 12 instructors, and 4 executives in nursing education were purposively selected to participate in the study. Data were gathered through focus group and in-depth interviews, and were analyzed using content analysis.

            The study found 3 themes including 1) points of views towards using online teaching and learning in the nursing practicum: differences and similarities between nursing lecture and practicum regarding online teaching and learning, alternatives for implementing online teaching and learning in the nursing practicum, and appropriate types of online teaching and learning in nursing practicum;
2) outcomes of online teaching and learning: positive outcomes and challenge outcomes; and
3) suggestions for using online teaching and learning in the nursing practicum. The findings indicated that integrated online teaching and learning was suitable for the nursing practicum in the new normal era. Online teaching and learning helped nursing students gain nursing knowledge, transfer it into nursing practice, and enhance lifelong learning skills. However, receiving support in terms of policies and infrastructure system for online teaching were needed. It is suggested that a further study should focus on developing teaching and learning methods for the nursing practicum in order to enhance competency of nursing students.
