Therapeutic play for hospitalized children: a guide to nursing practice

Play is natural and important for children.  Play is especially important for a child with illness.  Play for hospitalized children falls into two types: recreational play and therapeutic play.  Therapeutic play has a specific purpose for coping with stress and has a physical and psychological impact.  Therapeutic play consists of tension-release, preparation, and health maintenance.  Nursing is a potential source of healthcare workers who can stay with a child and concern themselves with therapeutic play.  Therefore, the nurse has a role in preparing for assessment, diagnosing, planning, setting up therapeutic play, and evaluating of a pediatric patient.  This article is useful for a nurse in understanding the meaning of therapeutic play, its importance, type, techniques, and the nursing role in therapeutic play.
