Abstract

This research aimed to study demographic data and supportive factors among village health volunteers (VHVs) about their level of participation in order to prevent and control Tuberculosis (TB) disease. Relationship between demographic data and supportive factors in prevention and control of TB were examined. Sample was 243 VHVs who had at least one year of work experience in
Dok Kham Tai District of Phayao Province. Purposive sampling method was used. Tool was a questionnaire on knowledge and participation into prevention and control of TB. Reliability of instrument was tested, using both KR-20 and Cronbach's alpha coefficient, obtaining values of 0.866 and 0.982, respectively. Statistics used for data analysis were percentage, mean, and Chi-square.

The results revealed as follows. Knowledge about TB was at a low level for 46.50% of VHVs (M= 9.6, S.D.= 1.78). Volunteers had got their information about TB from healthcare professionals at the Tambon Health Promoting Hospital. Overall, participation of VHVs was at a moderate level (M= 3.08, S.D.= 0.87). Age, educational level, duration of work as a volunteer, and receiving some budget support were statistically significant correlated with the participation in the prevention and control of tuberculosis (p<0.05).

The present research suggest that related agencies should support the development of VHVs’capacity in terms of knowledge about tuberculosis at least once a year. Moral encouragement for VHVs should be provided to prolong their period of work. And budget should be continuously supported, in order to promote further activities and participation in TB prevention and control.
