Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to study the level of anxiety and factors related to anxiety among patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy in Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital.   Sample was 355 patients who underwent gastrointestinal endoscopy in Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital. Systematic random sampling was applied. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-square, and Fisher’s exact test.

Result revealed that most of patients (70.7) had anxiety at a moderate level. Occupational, income adequacy, fear of laparoscopy, and obtaining information were significantly correlated with anxiety among patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy (p<0.05).

Per findings, nursing care plan for patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy by giving accurate information is important as well as psychological preparation before the intervention, in order to reduce fear and anxiety.
