Abstract

This cross-sectional study aimed to: 1) explore the level of knowledge, skills, and needs of information technology (IT) competency development among pharmacists in hospitals, and 2) identify factors associated with that level of competency. Sample was 324 pharmacists working in hospitals in Health Region 12. Data were collected during the period of March to May, 2021, using a questionnaire. Instrument was validated by three experts, yielding values ranged between 0.67-1.00. Reliability of questionnaire was tested using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, obtaining a value of 0.97. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and multiple logistic regression. Results were as follows.

1. The knowledge about IT (M= 2.54, S.D.= 0.84), the knowledge and skills about IT management (M= 2.83, S.D= 0.77), the skills regarding computer package program and software (M= 3.28, S.D.= 0.63), and the communication skills (M= 3.40, S.D.= 0.76) were rated at a moderate level. Internet using skills were rated at a high level (M= 3.70, S.D.= 0.70). Database design skill was rated at low level (M= 2.32, S.D.= 0.85). The need of IT competency development was rated at a moderate level (M= 3.64, S.D.= 0.81).

2. Pharmaceutical services into inpatient department (ORadj= 1.87; 95%CI: 1.08 – 3.23), pharmaceutical clinics (ORadj= 2.00; 95%CI: 1.11 – 3.62), pharmacy in primary care/consumer protection (ORadj= 0.43; 95%CI: 0.24 – 0.78), location (province) (ORadj= 2.46; 95%CI: 1.01 – 6.02), internet using skill (ORadj= 0.42; 95%CI: 0.23 – 0.74), and communication skill (ORadj= 4.51; 95%CI: 1.64 – 12.37) were significantly associated with the needs of IT competency development.

The findings suggest that hospital directors should support the pharmacists working in pharmaceutical services of inpatient department and pharmacy clinics to develop their communication skills, and internet using skill in order to promote their IT competency.
