Abstract

This cross-sectional descriptive research aimed to explore the quality of life of elderly with chronic non-communicable diseases in Trang Province, and to determine factors related to their quality of life. The study population was 410 people aged 60 years and over with a history of diabetes and hypertension. Subjects were selected by simple random sampling. The research tools were the interview forms, consisting of: 1) personal information, 2) predisposing, enabling, reinforcing factors, and self-care behaviors, and 3) the World Health Organization's quality of Life  questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square, Fisher's Exact Test and spearman's rank correlation.

The results showed that most of the elderly (68.29%) had a high level of knowledge on diabetes and hypertension. 76.83% had a high level of beliefs and attitudes about diabetes and high blood pressure. Attitude about resources and access to public health services was at a moderate level of (58.29%), as well as social and family support (54.88%). Self-care behaviors was low (54.63%). The majority of the elderly (82.93%) had a moderate level of quality of life. They had an overall mean quality of life value of 82.73(+11.093). Correlation analyses indicated that resources and access to public health services, social and family support, and self-care behaviors were positively but lowly related to the quality of life.

These results can be used as a basis for designing self-care activities program for the elderly, as well as family and community care.
