Abstract

This cross-sectional survey research aimed to investigate the level of stroke care competency and knowledge in managing patients with acute stroke among professional nurses in the network care system at Khiri Rat Nikhom Hospital, as well as the factors related to competency and knowledge. The sample group consisted of 157 nurses, of whom 141 (89.81%) responded to the survey, which was administered online to measure competency and knowledge. The reliability of the survey for competency was 0.96, and for knowledge was 0.74, with difficulty ranging from 0.3 to 0.8. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s and Spearman’s rank correlations, t-test, chi-square, and ANOVA.

The results showed that professional nurses had competency scores overall at a low level or at the beginner level towards advancement. The majority of nurses demonstrated competency levels ranging from beginner to advanced, followed by the competent level (28.37 percent), the beginning work level (24.11 percent), the skilled level (8.51 percent), and the expert level (2.84 percent). Their knowledge was at a moderate level (58.16%), with knowledge correlating with overall competency levels (r= 0.25 - 0.38, p < 0.05). Both knowledge and overall competency levels were related to the group of professional expertise competency levels in stroke patient care (rho=0.26 and 0.96 respectively, p < 0.05). Nurses who had received training in stroke patient care exhibited higher overall competency and knowledge compared to those who had not received training (t=3.29 and 2.64 respectively,
p < 0.05).

Therefore, the Ministry of Public Health and hospitals should promote knowledge and provide training in stroke patient care for nurses, tailored to the competency levels of nurses, especially those in the beginner and beginner to advanced groups, which comprise approximately 60% of all nurses in the care network.
