Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the effects of a social support program on anxiety among pregnant women experiencing preterm labor. The study included 52 participants admitted to the labor unit at Kumpawapi Hospital in Udonthani Province between September 2023 and March 2024. Participants were assigned to either an experimental group (n= 26), which received both the social support program and routine nursing care, or a control group (n= 26), which received only routine nursing care. Research instruments included a social support program developed by the researcher based on House's social support model, which includes emotional support, informational support, instrumental support, and appraisal support, a Demographic Data Record Form, a visual analogue scale for anxiety (reliability coefficient, Pearson's r = 0.93), and a researcher-developed anxiety assessment tool for pregnant women experiencing preterm labor (reliability coefficient, Cronbach's α = 0.88). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired sample t-tests, and independent t-tests.

Results indicated a significant reduction in anxiety scores within the experimental group after receiving the social support program (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the experimental group exhibited significantly lower anxiety scores compared to the control group (p < 0.01).

These findings underscore the potential benefits of implementing social support programs by nurse-midwives to alleviate anxiety among pregnant women experiencing preterm labor.
