Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to study resilience and the factors predicting resilience among 129 older adults in Nam Som District, Udon Thani Province. Stratified random sampling was employed. The instruments used included questionnaires on perceived health status, social support, ability to perform daily activities, coping and problem-solving, self-esteem, and resilience. The content validity of the instruments, assessed by the index of item-objective congruence (IOC), ranged from 0.67 to 1.00. The Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficients for the instruments were 0.96, 0.92, 0.72, 0.84, 0.71, and 0.96, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression analysis.

The study found that the overall resilience of older adults in Nam Som District, Udon Thani Province was mostly at a moderate level (66.67%). The factors that significantly predicted resilience were coping and problem-solving (Beta = .420), social support (Beta = .351), and self-esteem (Beta = .193), with a statistical significance level of .001. These factors explained 41.20% of the variance in resilience (adjR² = .412).

Therefore, community hospitals should promote activities that enhance older adults' abilities to cope with and manage problems, foster self-esteem, and provide various forms of social support. This includes emotional support, information sharing, material and financial assistance, occupational support, as well as social recognition and appreciation.
