Abstract

This quasi-experimental study with a two-group pretest-posttest design aimed to examine the effects of an empowerment program on the caregiving burden of caregivers for older adults with depression receiving outpatient services at the Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic, Songkhla Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital. A total of 52 participants were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (n= 26), who participated in the empowerment program, or the control group (n= 26), who received standard care. Simple random sampling was used by alternately drawing lots to assign participants to each group. The research instruments included 1) a demographic questionnaire for caregivers and a caregiving burden assessment scale for caregivers of older adults with depression, with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.85; and 2) the empowerment program to reduce the caregiving burden of caregivers for older adults with depression consisted of five activities, each lasting 30–60 minutes. The program was reviewed by three experts, yielding a content validity index (CVI) ranging from 0.67 to 1.00. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, paired t-test, and independent t-test. The study results indicated that:

     1) After participating in the program, the experimental group showed a statistically significant reduction in caregiving burden compared to before the intervention (t = -2.1, p = .045, p < .05).

      2) The experimental group also had a significantly lower caregiving burden than the control group after the intervention (t = -2.25, p = .030, p < .05).

These findings suggest that the empowerment program effectively reduces the perceived caregiving burden among caregivers of older adults with depression. Therefore, mental health and psychiatric nurses can apply this program in their practice to alleviate the caregiving burden experienced by these caregivers.
