Abstract

This quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest study aimed to compare depression scores among cancer patients at Surin Hospital before and after participating in supportive group therapy. The sample consisted of 27 cancer inpatients selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments included: (1) a supportive group therapy program comprising six activities, validated by three experts with a content validity index (CVI) of 1.00; and (2) a depression assessment scale with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.738. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.

The study found that after participating in supportive group therapy, cancer patients had significantly lower depression scores compared to before the intervention, with statistical significance at the .001 level (Z = -4.544, p < 0.001).

Therefore, supportive group therapy was effective in reducing depression among cancer patients. Nursing personnel can apply this intervention in caring for cancer patients to help alleviate depressive symptoms.
