Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to: (1) compare the mean scores of knowledge and self-regulated dietary behaviors among patients with type 2 diabetes and stage 2–3a kidney impairment in the experimental group before and after receiving the program; and (2) compare these scores between the experimental and control groups. The sample consisted of 60 patients with type 2 diabetes and early kidney impairment, purposively selected and assigned to either the experimental group (n = 30) or the control group (n = 30). Research instruments, developed based on the concept of self-regulation, included a demographic questionnaire, a knowledge assessment, a dietary behavior assessment, and a dietary behavior record. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test, and independent t-test.

The results showed that, after receiving the program, the experimental group had a high level of knowledge (M = 12.23, SD = 1.57) and a moderate level of self-regulated dietary behavior (M = 32.20, SD = 3.29). Both knowledge and dietary behavior scores were significantly higher than before receiving the program (p < 0.05).

In conclusion, the self-regulation program was effective in enhancing knowledge and promoting appropriate dietary behaviors among patients with type 2 diabetes and early-stage kidney impairment. The findings suggest that this program can be applied to effectively support self-care among this patient population.
