SELECTED FACTORS RELATED TO MEDICATION ADHERENCE IN PERSONS WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA

Abstract
Objective: To study the relationships of gender, attitudes toward medication treatment, duration of illness, numbers of hospitalization, the frequency of medication intake per day, and medication side effects to medication adherence in persons with schizophrenia.
Methods: This study was a descriptive correlational research design. The participants were seventy three persons with schizophrenia both male and female who received care at the community hospital and health promoting hospital in charge of a district in the central region of Thailand from May - June 2017. Data were collected by six questionnaires comprising of the BPRS scale, The set test, The personal data questionnaire, Attitude toward antipsychotic drug use questionnaire, Interview questionnaire for evaluating the frequency of adverse drug reactions in schizophrenic patients and Medication adherence questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rank-order correlation were used for data analysis.
Results: The study results revealed that attitude toward medication treatment was positively and significantly related to medication adherence (r = .36, p < .05) However, gender, numbers of hospitalization, frequency of medication intake per day and medication side effects were not related to medication adherence (p>.05). Results from this study can be used to plan for medication adherence promotion in persons with schizophrenia.
