THE EFFECT OF FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY PROMOTION COMBINED WITH THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIP PROGRAM ON WELL - BEING OF SCHIZOPHRENIC PATIENTS

Abstract
Objectives: The purposes of this quasi-experimental research were: 1) to compare the well-being of persons with schizophrenia before and after receiving the functional capacity promotion combined with therapeutic relationship program, and 2) to compare the well-being of persons with schizophrenia who received the functional capacity promotion combined with therapeutic relationship program and those who received regular caring activities.
Methods: Samples were forty persons with schizophrenia purposively recruited according to inclusion criteria. They were matched-pair by age and income sufficiency and then randomly assigned into experimental and control group, 20 subjects in each group. The experimental group received the functional capacity promotion combined with therapeutic relationship program, whereas the control group received regular caring activates. Research instruments were: 1) the functional capacity promotion combined with therapeutic relationship program, 2) Well-being measurement form, and 3) Social skill life profile. All instruments were validated for content by 4 experts and cronbach’s alpha coefficient reliability of instruments number 2 and 3 were .92 and .87, respectively. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANCOVA and analysis of effect size were used for data analysis.
Results: Major findings were as follows:
- Effect size and well-being of persons with schizophrenia after receiving the program was significantly higher than that before at the .05 level.
- After the experiment, effect size and well-being of persons with schizophrenia who received the program was significantly higher than those who received regular caring activities at the .05 level.
