Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the preliminary efficacy of a behavioral activation in reducing depressive symptoms among individuals with depression.

Methods: This study was a research and development design combined with a mixed-methods in two phases. The first phase was to develop behavioral activation therapy for depression. The development process was carried out from five focus group interviews, each 4-10 persons per group with 37 depressed patients aged 18-35 years old in Ubonratchathani, Sisaket and Yasothon province. The second phase was to test the program's efficacy using a one-group pre-post test design. The participants were nineteen depressed patients. Instruments were the interview for focus group in phase 1, the program and 9Q-revision in phase 2. Depression score was evaluated at baseline, post-intervention, and a follow-up one month after the intervention.

Results: The finding of phase 1 indicated that behavioral activation therapy for depression was individual therapy and processed for nine sessions from session 0 to session 8, 60 minutes for each session. The preliminary test results in 13 depressed patients because there were five patients unable to participate in all steps and one patient considered from study participation. It was found that the average age was 25.62 years old, mostly nine females and four males. The result showed that the depression score in participants receiving the program for post-intervention and a follow-up one month after post-intervention was significantly decreased from before intervention (p-value = 0.001, p-value = 0.002), respectively.

Conclusion: Behavioral activation therapy for depression could help reduce depression scores in depressed patients. However, therapists should be trained in behavioral activation therapy for depression before experimenting on the patients.
