Knowledge and Self-care Behavior using Local Wisdom among Postpartum Mother, Yang Wai Sub-district, Khon Sawan District, Chaiyaphum Province

The objectives of this descriptive research were to 1) study knowledge and self-care behaviors using local wisdom, 2) compare the self-care behaviors using local wisdom among demographic groups, and 3) explore relationships between knowledge and self-care behaviors using local wisdom among postpartum mothers. The samples were consisted of 59 postpartum mothers in the area of Yang Wai subdistrict, Khon Sawan district, Chaiyaphum province. The data were collected using a knowledge measurement form and a self-care behavior with local wisdom questionnaire which were checked for content validity. The reliability of the knowledge measurement form using KR-20 was 0.74 while the reliability for the self-care behavior with local wisdom questionnaire using the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.89. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson’s correlations.
The results showed that the majority of the samples had a high level of knowledge (16-20 points; 78%) and a high level of self-care behaviors with local wisdom of the postpartum women (=4.35, SD=0.42). When classified by demographic data, postpartum self-care behavior with local wisdom differed by age and education at a statistical level of 0.05. There was a significant positive correlation between knowledge and postpartum self-care behavior with local wisdom (p<0.05, r=0.436).
It is recommended to promote knowledge and self-care behaviors with local wisdom of the postpartum mothers suitable with contexts of each communities to conserve and promote good cultural traditions of Thailand.
