Oral Health Care In Primary Care For Patients With Stroke In Lam Narai Subdistrict, Chai Badan District, Lopburi Province

Abstract

The objectives of this action research were to 1) assess the oral health status of stroke patients, 2) develop a dental service model for stroke patients, and 3) evaluate the dental service model for stroke patients The target group was consisted of 29 stroke patients aged 41-80 years old currently registered with a community medical center in Lam Narai subdistrict, Chai Badan district, Lopburi province.  Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics using independent sample t-test with significant level set at p=0.01.

The results showed that 1) according to the survey of stroke patients aged 41-80 years old residing in Lam Narai sub-district, Chai Badan district, Lopburi province most patients were unable to help themselves (55.17 percent), 44.82 percent had confusions in communication and difficulties in swallowing and 34.48 percent needed assistances brushing their teeth; 2) all patients (100 percent) received dental services based on information obtained from the Oral Health Assessment Tool; and 3) after setting up the home visit system for stroke patients, number of patients receiving dental services significantly improved from an average of 9 patients to an average of 29 patients at p-value = 0.01.
