Effectiveness of Acupuncture treatment for Migraine at Inthanin Clinic Nakhonratchasima College

Abstract

This study was a randomized controlled trial aiming to study the effectiveness of acupuncture and Chinese massage on migraine headache. Samples were selected through purposive selection method from migraine patients who received treatments at Inthanin Clinic Nakhonratchasima College, from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022. Methods included 40 migraine patients were randomly and equally divided into two groups with 20 patients received acupuncture–Chinese massage treatment (experimental group) while another 20 patients received regular acupuncture treatment (control group). The researchers assessed the patients’ pain scale using visual analog scale (VAS) before and immediately after treatments. Results showed that there was no statistical difference in general data and health data between the two groups (p>0.05). Both groups had significant decrease in pain score (VAS) before and after the treatments (p<0.05). When comparing the differences between groups, the mean pain score (VAS) among the patients who received acupuncture–Chinese massage treatments was significantly lower than those who received regular acupuncture treatments (p<0.05). It can be concluded that acupuncture–Chinese massage treatments and regular acupuncture can reduce migraine pain. However, acupuncture–Chinese massage treatments are more effective in managing migraine pain than regular acupuncture treatment.
