Development of Survival Skills Model When Encountering Dangers and Emergencies for Child Mentors in Metropolitan Health and Wellness Institution, Nonthaburi Province

Abstract

The purpose of this research and development study was to develop and assess knowledge and satisfaction of a survival skill program for mentors in a Metropolitan Health and Wellness Institution located in Nonthaburi, as well as to evaluate their satisfactions with the program. This study collected the data on satisfaction and knowledge using questionnaires with 35 mentors and 35 parents, for a total of 70 samples who used the model. The instrument was tested for reliability yielding Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.95, indicating high reliability. The data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, and t-test.

Results from the study showed that, in phase 1, mentors developed the survival skills in dangerous and emergency encounters. In phase 2, mentors’ knowledge was evaluated both before and after the training. Prior to training, the average score was at 46.32 percent, while the average score increased significantly to 85.73 percent. Overall, mentors’ satisfaction with the program was rated at the highest level (=4.39, SD=0.52), with parents and model users also rated their satisfaction at a high level (=4.64, SD=0.41 and=4.66, SD=0.44, respectively). These findings suggested that the model should be applied in operational agency work.
