Treatment of Osteoarthritis Knee in The Elderly with Acupuncture

Osteoarthritis is a common disease in the elderly whose ages over 65 years old and this trend is increasing. Osteoarthritis not only affects physical health, but affect psychological and economic and social aspects. Elderly persons with osteoarthritis will not be able to lead a normal life because, physically, they are unable to walk or sit up easily due to pain and that increases risks of other complications. In psychological aspect, osteoarthritis results in a state of stress from the body being unable to function normally. Additionally, psychological aspect is also related to the social aspect because they need caregivers to take care of them. In economic aspect, the disease also has relatively high treatment cost, resulting increase stress level among elderly patients.
Objective of this article is to provide guidelines for treating osteoarthritis in the elderly using traditional Chinese medicine methods by acupuncture which is another form of osteoarthritis treatment that is not yet well known in Thailand. It is a treatment that does not depend on medications and it has relatively fewer side effects. Therefore, it is one treatment method that is more suitable for the elderly.
