Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Parents about Child Sexual Abuse Prevention

Objective: to explore knowledge, attitudes, and practices of parents in preventing sexual abuse in children.
Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was used. The study involved a group of 119 parents with children aged 3-6 years who were receiving services at the primary care cluster of Phra Phutthabat Hospital, Phra Phutthabat district, Saraburi province. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, incorporating both general information and specific inqueries regarding parental knowledge, attitudes, and practices in the prevention of child sexual abuse. The data were analyzed using inferential statistics and chi-square tests.
Results: The majority of parents displayed moderate knowledge (79.8%), positive attitudes (45.4%), and commendable practices (67.2%) regarding the prevention of sexual abuse. The findings identified that parental knowledge levels were significantly linked to both their education level (p<0.01), occupation (p<0.01), and their relationship with their children (p<0.01). There were significant associations between parental attitudes and various factors, including the parent's gender (p<0.01), age range (p<0.01), education level (p<0.01), occupation (p<0.01), relationship with the child (p<0.01), and the child's gender (p=0.02) and a significant association between parental practices and their status (p=0.03).
Conclusion: While most parents exhibit positive attitudes and practices on the prevention of sexual abuse in children, their knowledge level remains moderate. Therefore, it is essential to develop activities that specifically concentrate on imparting knowledge to parents about teaching children to prevent sexual abuse. The ultimate goal is to protect children from sexual abuse.
