Prevalence and Associated Factors of Depressive Disorder among the Elderly in Thailand, 2021

The elderly people around the world frequently suffer from depressive disorder. The global population is rapidly shifting toward elderly. By 2021, Thailand is anticipated to become a complete aged society. This descriptive cross-sectional study used data from Thailand’s Health Data Center (HDC) and aimed to calculate the prevalence, describe the characteristics and distribution of depressive disorder, and identify associated factors of the level of depressive disorder among the elderly in Thailand in 2021. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The logistic regression was performed to identify the factors associated with level of depressive disorder. A total 9,089 Thai patient records of depressive disorder aged ≥ 60 years in 2021 were obtained. The prevalence of depressive disorder was 0.08%. According to the distribution, the highest morbidity rate was found in the northern region (133.7 per 100,000 population). The ratio of males to females who had depressive disorder was 1 to 3.1. The mean age of cases was 70.01±7.28 years old. Characteristics of elderly with depressive disorder included that 76.4% were younger elderly, 66.6% graduated from a primary educational level, 31.4% had body mass index (BMI) of ≥ 25 kg/m2. For multivariable analysis, the variables that had a statistically significant associations with level of depressive disorder were age 60-74 years old (AOR=1.27, 95%CI 1.06-1.53) and BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 (AOR=1.26, 95%CI 1.06-1.49). The findings suggested that health care worker should promote the aging and pre-aging people for early detection and mental health literacy should be strengthened. Early and continuous treatment of depressive disorder by the experts for the younger elderly and those with obesity must be emphasized.
