Interdisciplinary Attitudes toward Ward Pharmacists and Burnout Syndrome among Ward Pharmacists in a Super-tertiary Care Hospital

Background: Ward pharmacists play an important role in promoting appropriate and safe medication use through collaborative practice with multidisciplinary healthcare teams. However, increasing expectations and workload may contribute to work-related stress and lead to burnout syndrome.
Objectives: To investigate the attitudes and expectations of multidisciplinary healthcare professionals toward ward pharmacists, and to explore their perspectives, perceived barriers, and burnout syndrome.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among physicians, nurses, and ward pharmacists in a super-tertiary care hospital. Participants were recruited using purposive sampling between November 2024 and January 2025. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Results: Most physicians and nurses reported high levels of satisfaction with the role of ward pharmacists. The most frequently reported expectation was pharmacists’ provision of appropriate recommendations on drug dosage and administration (76.75%). Pharmacists rated medication reconciliation as the role they performed best (81.82%). Major perceived barriers included inadequate compensation, additional non-clinical workload, and limited career advancement. Some pharmacists experienced burnout syndrome, primarily in the dimension of emotional exhaustion.
Conclusion: Multidisciplinary healthcare professionals demonstrated high levels of satisfaction with the role of ward pharmacists. Nevertheless, a proportion of pharmacists experienced burnout syndrome. These findings provide useful evidence for hospital administrators to support workforce planning and the development of supportive systems to enhance the sustainability of pharmaceutical care services.
