Anxiety management and promotion of effective face-down positioning in patients following retinal surgery

Abstract
Some patients undergoing retinal surgery are required to maintain continuous face-down positioning to ensure that gas tamponade remains in the appropriate position to support the therapeutic outcome.. However, prolonged face-down positioning may cause anxiety, physical discomfort, and limitations in activities of daily living which may subsequently affect patients’ adherence to postoperative self-care. This academic article aims to compile relevant nursing concepts for the management of anxiety and the promotion of effective face-down positioning in patients following retinal surgery. The key contents include anxiety and its effects on patients, the application of Peplau’s Theory of Interpersonal Relations, information provision and therapeutic communication; promotion of health literacy and family involvement; evidence related to face-down positioning; prevention of discomfort and positioning-related complications; and individualized nursing care. Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory is also incorporated to support patients’ self-care during recovery at home. Ophthalmic nurses play an important roles in assessing individual patient needs, reducing anxiety, promoting self-care abilities, and planning continuity of care to support safe recovery and an appropriate quality of life.
