Development of a Care Model for Stroke Patients during Rehabilitation

Abstract

Objective: To develop a care model for stroke patients during rehabilitation and to study the outcome of the application of the model to providing care for these patients 

Design: Research and development 

Methodology: This two-group quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test was conducted in four stages: 1) problem analysis; 2) model development; 3) trial in two ischaemic stroke patients and proper adjustments; and 4) application of the adjusted model, and evaluation. The sample consisted of 30 purposively sampled ischaemic stroke patients, equally assigned to the control group and experimental group. Whilst the control group received standard care, the experimental group was given the self-care model for ischaemic stroke patients during rehabilitation. The instruments for data collection were: 1) a general information questionnaire; 2) a self-management behaviour index for ischaemic stroke patients during rehabilitation; 3) Chula ADL Index; and 5) a life quality index. Intra-group and inter-group statistical comparisons were measured using a dependent t-test and an independent t-test, respectively. 

Results: Based on the study, the experimental group’s mean score on self-management behaviour was significantly higher than the control group’s (p < .01). The experimental group also displayed significantly better performance of basic activities of daily living than the control group did (p < .05). Next, the experimental group’s mean score on life quality was significantly higher than the control group’s (p < .01). However, no significant differences in ongoing performance of daily living activities and in comorbidity control (namely, blood glucose, blood pressure, and blood lipids) were detected between the two groups. 

Recommendations: It is recommended that this self-management model be applied to ischaemic stroke patients during rehabilitation to promote their recovery and better quality of life
