Abstract

Objective: To study elderly type 2 diabetes patients’ knowledge
of diabetes,perception of self-effcacy, self-regulation and social
support as predictive factors in the patients’ self-management
behaviour.
Design: Predictive research.
Procedure: This study, based on Ryan’s Integrated Theory of Health
Behavior Change, was conducted on 132 purposively sampled
type 2 diabetes patients aged 60 and older. Data were collected by
means of a questionnaire and analysed using descriptive
statistics, Pearson correlation coeffcient and stepwise multiple
regression coeffcient analysis.

Results: The experimental group displayed a medium degree of
self-management behaviour ( = 5.59, S.D. = 0.87).
The combined factors of knowledge of diabetes, perception of
self-effcacy, self-regulation and social support were capable of predicting
81.2% of the participants’ self-management behaviour
(R2 = .812, F = 142.59, p < .01), whilst the perception of
self-effcacy was the most powerful predictive factor
(β = .597, p < .01).
Recommendations: The fndings of this study offer basic information
on caring for elderly type 2 diabetes patients. Based on the study,
it is recommended that such patients be accompanied by their family
members during meals and physical exercise,
as such companionship could enhance the patients’ health-care
behaviour. In addition, the fndings could be applied to further
developing a self-management programme for elderly type 2
diabetes patients.
