Abstract:
Objective: To examine any correlation that health condition, religious belief and
life satisfaction had with elderly community members’ gerotranscendence.
Design: Descriptive research.
Methodology: This study was conducted on a sample of 183 elderly people aged
60 or higher, living in a community in Bangkok. Data were collected by means of (i) a personal
information interview; (ii) a health condition questionnaire; (iii) a religious belief and
practice questionnaire; and (iv) a life satisfaction questionnaire. The data were analysed
using descriptive statistics and the Spearman Rank Correlation Coeffcient.
Results: The majority of the sample participants were in good health, with relatively
high degrees of religious belief and practice (mean = 45.81, SD = 6.62, skewness = -.54;
mean = 52.25, SD = 6.55, skewness -1.59, respectively) and life satisfaction (mean =
59.39, SD = 9.89, skewness = -.91). However, the participants displayed a relatively
low degree of gerotranscendence (mean = 73.48, SD = 5.98, Skewness = .27). Their
religious belief was also found to be in a signifcantly low positive correlation with their
world-view and self-view gerotranscendence (both at rs = .19). However, no signifcant
correlation was found between the participants’ gerotranscendence and their health condition,
religious practice and life satisfaction.
Recommendations: It is recommended that a religious belief and gerotranscendence
evaluation method be developed according to Thai social context. In addition, research
focusing on gerotranscendence in elderly people in other regions of Thailand is recommended
in order to enlarge the empirical evidence database on gerotranscendence amongst the elderly
in Thai society.
