Abstract

Background and objective: Peer support intervention has been recommended as an adjunct to antiretroviral therapy, but the evaluation of this intervention was limited in Thailand. The aim of this study was to compare viral suppression rate between Peer Support Group (PSG) and non-PSG.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study of adults receiving ART between July 2013 and June 2018 in Chaiwan Hospital was performed. Viral suppression were compared by intention to treat between 2 groups, using Log-binomial regression for multivariable analysis to calculate adjusted odds ratios.

Results: There were 33 patients in PSG and 20 in non-PSG. The loss to follow-up rate was 3.0 % in PSG versus 15.0% in non-PSG. After 5 years, viral suppression between PSG and non-PSG was not a statistically significant difference. (adjusted OR, 2.73 ; 95% confidence interval , 0.42 to 18.01)

Conclusions: The difference in viral load suppression over five years between PSG and non-PSG did not reach statistical significance due to a small number of subjects. Further scale-up of study in Thailand should be considered.
